Help spread love to trauma survivors

The bags will be handed to every person that comes in for help. It will consist of items that can help the victim to feel like a survivor.

TO BRING comfort to survivors of traumatic incidents, the Ward 66 vulnerable groups sub-committee is compiling survivor bags, which are small bags with essential personal care items, to hand to those who utilise the facilities at the Victim Friendly Room at Brighton Beach police station.

Driving the initiative, the sub-committee’s Chantal Bransgrove-Bower said, “Sometimes, having to report a traumatic crime can cause trauma itself. Sexual abuse of a minor, rape and domestic violence survivors come for help after a crime has been committed against them. The process can involve going to a district surgeon, home, shelter, or many areas that take a victim, once again, out of their comfort zone.

“The bags will be handed to every person that comes in for help. It will consist of items that can help the victim to feel like a survivor.

“We want the bags to be a small piece of comfort to help them get through the secondary trauma and are made for both adults and children. We have kicked off our fundraising initiatives for the bags and have also enjoyed the support of our community.

“We appreciate and welcome any donations or ideas on making the lives of survivors a bit comfortable while they receive help,” added Bransgrove-Bower. To donate, contact Chantal Bransgrove-Bower on 083 734 2841.
