National shutdown: Business as usual for south Durban communities
Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter says all security forces are on alert, and he urges residents not to share unverified information.
POLICE, security personnel and residents who form part of the Community Policing Forums (CPFs) have mobilised and remain on high alert today, assuring residents that communities are safeguarded.
Closely monitoring the EFF’s proposed protests, law enforcement officials were out in full force since the early hours of this morning, with only a few sporadic incidents in and around Durban.
It’s business as usual in most areas, including The Bluff, Montclair, Merebank and Wentworth.
Montclair CPF chairperson Shawn Smith said all role-players were working together to ensure that no disruptions affect residents.

“All stakeholders stood down at entrances to monitor. No serious incidents were recorded
“A group from Lamontville CPF and workers from the factories in South Coast Road marched in protest but did not disrupt traffic and greeted everyone present to ensure that the law was upheld.
Today, we have extra SAPS and Metro Police in the area, and neighbourhood watch volunteers are also on high alert. There is no real threat as yet, but we are ready if we are needed,” added Smith.
Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter said that although there is a lot of concern over the proposed disruption of the economy, the reality is that many people have taken a long weekend, and lots of companies are closed.
“It is expected that there will be nothing more than isolated instances of disruption. All security forces, including SAPS, Metro Police, SANDF and private security companies, are on full alert to attend to any unlawful activities.
“We appeal to residents to not share any posts on social media unless they have been verified. It is not only illegal but irresponsible because it just creates unnecessary panic.
“Today is a normal working day for most, and I will be available if residents have any queries,” Hegter added.
