WATCH: Platinum jubilee for Brighton Beach school
This milestone was celebrated by teachers and learners from 1955, to date.

LEARNERS from Brighton Beach Senior Primary School were ecstatic to have been a part of the school’s 70th birthday celebration and showcased their talents during a grand celebration, recently.
This milestone was celebrated by guest speakers comprising teachers and learners from 1955, to date.
Principal of the school, Dr Shalina Naicker, said it was a trip down memory lane making history come alive for the learners.
“I am proud to be steering the ship during this celebration. We are proud of the school’s rich heritage of excellence in academics and sports and thank all role-players who made the anniversary celebration a special and heartwarming event which will be remembered for many generations,” added Naicker.
The school, initially known as the Brighton Beach Infant Government School, opened its doors for the first time in January 1951.

The school was housed in the hall of St Margaret’s Church and was equipped to accommodate 48 learners. On the first school day on 23 January, 1951, 11 learners were enrolled.
By 1953, a bigger premises had to be found and on May 27, 1953, the building on the present site on Marine Drive was occupied.

The Brighton Beach Government School (as it was then known) continued to grow rapidly as a full-range primary school until 1957.
Additions have since been made to the original buildings. These include the school hall built in 1963, an administration block built in 1965, and the swimming pool which was built in 1967.

In 2006, the school’s library was extended and a computer room was built and officially opened in June, 2006.
The school is proud to boast a roll of over 500 learners during their 70th anniversary celebrations.
