CHESS players of all ages gathered at the Yellowwood Park Civic Hall to participate in the KZN Closed Chess Championship recently.

The purpose of the tournament was to help select a KZN team that will represent the province at the Mzansi Inter-provincial youth chess championship in December.

The top three best male and female players in each age group will be identified following the event.

Vice president of the KZN Chess Association, Lisa Griffiths, said the final team selection will take place in three weeks’ time.

“We have done part one of the tournament a few months ago. The chess is open to any age from various KZN municipalities,” said Griffiths.

She said the tournament provides players with an opportunity to compete against others from across the province while also showcasing their skills.

The final team will be selected after the players’ performance from the different stages of the tournament have been assessed.

Griffiths said the tournament was not limited to players from one particular area, allowing chess enthusiasts from different parts of the province to participate and compete.

For many of the players the competition provides more than an opportunity to win games, as strong performance could bring them one step closer to representing the province at an inter-provincial level.
