Merebank alliance, residents work together to clean up community

The Merebank Alliance Forum will have more clean-ups in the future.

DOING their bit to uplift their community, the Merebank Alliance Forum (MAF), together with residents, embarked on a clean-up of Calicut Place in Merebank recently.

Ringo Naidoo, MAF’s vice-chairperson, said the street has been known for many years as Merebank Lookout Point, as it has a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean, the canal, Cuttings Beach and Merebank.

“However, it is also a popular destination for party revellers. Over the last few years, we have noticed that fewer inhabitants of this area pay respect to the cleanliness of this spot, and many have been littering the area repeatedly.

“The forum, together with some of the residents, came together and spent two hours picking up the litter and cleaning up the area. We were also supported by our neighbours, The Bluff Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association (BRRA) and SDCEA (South Durban Community Environmental Alliance), who purchased items needed for this endeavour. Their constant support is appreciated,” he said.

Naidoo said the MAF will be embarking on more clean-ups in Merebank.

“We believe a clean environment is something we can all achieve with our network of road groups, making us proud of our beautiful community. We are also calling on residents to be actively involved in keeping our community clean. There are bins provided, and they should be used instead of littering,” he said.
