Captain Carmen Rhynes, the eThekwini district police spokesperson, said officers from Wentworth Police Station were on routine patrols when they received the distressing call at about 06:00.

“It is alleged that the 15-year-old victim came to school early and waited outside the school administration block when the suspect suddenly approached him and demanded his school bag. When he refused to hand over his school bag, the suspect took out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest and back and he fell on the ground bleeding. An ambulance arrived shortly thereafter and transported him to a nearby hospital,” said Rhynes.

Captain Mbuso Gumede, Wentworth police spokesperson, confirmed that detectives recovered the stolen school bag, and that the victim’s cell phone was returned to him.

The learner suspect appeared at the Durban children’s court on November 15 but was then released back into his parents custody to complete the Grade 12 examinations. Rhynes said he would appear in court on November 28 to be remanded to a place of safety.

She added that the 15-year-old victim had been discharged from the hospital and is recovering well.
