THE KZN MEC for education, Sipho Hlomuka, has praised the SAPS for their swift action in carrying out a drug bust at Fairvale Secondary School in Wentworth on March 6. The surprise search and seizure were occasioned by rising cases of violence and drug activities in the school. Various tip-offs had been made to the authorities regarding criminal activities among learners, prompting swift action to ensure a safe learning environment.
MEC Hlomuka restated the department’s zero-tolerance stance on criminality infiltrating schools. “We will not idly stand by while drugs and illegal activities threaten the safety and education of our children,” he said.
The MEC also urged parents and guardians to be more involved in keeping an eye on their children.
“We ask that parents be intentional about ensuring that their children stay away from the use of illegal substances and any criminal activities. The safety and well-being of our learners requires joint effort between the department, law enforcement, and families,” added the MEC.
Muzi Mahlambi, spokesperson of the KZN Department of Education, also commended the police’s efforts.
The operation’s success at Fairvale Secondary School is a significant move in ensuring that schools are safe places for learners to focus on studying without being impacted by crime and drug abuse.
