Caxton Cares Square by Square: Blankets and wool continue to stream in
With the help of the community the SUN hopes to spread warmth to 500 senior citizens in time for winter.

THE Caxton Cares Square by Square Project has gained another few blankets. The tally currently is on 38 complete knee blankets, and we have enough blocks to make another five blankets.
“This means that we will have a total of 43 blankets that can be donated to our senior citizens, who need a little extra warmth this winter,” said the editor of the Southlands/ South Coast SUN, Roelien D’Amico.

“We also received a wool donation, all the way from England, but will it be enough to reach our goal? The project is gaining momentum and it is clear that excitement is growing among those who are contributing,” she said.
D’Amico said she had no idea that the crochet and knitting community was so big. “I always thought this craft was only for the older generation, keeping themselves busy at night, however, the younger generation are also contributing to this project. Apart from the trusted SUN staff member, Gerda Macgregor, who is a master in her craft, another three employees are crocheting as well.
“We learn as we go along and with Gerda onboard, we can quickly ask for advice and guidance. At least I do not hear as many ‘It’s wrong, undo!’ than before. It has changed to ‘well done, you are doing great!’

“Her enthusiasm, to teach others, has rubbed off on us as well,” she said. There is still a long way to go before the SUN reaches its goal of 500 blankets. “But, we are well on our way. Thank you to every contributor and thank you to those who have donated wool and finished blocks.”
Each crochet or knitted block should be 15cm x 15cm and when the blocks are sewn together, the blanket should be at least 90cm. The SUN created a WhatsApp group to give those who participate or just need a helping hand, the encouragement to continue as well as an update of the blankets received. Send a WhatsApp message to 079 728 6787, call the office on 031 903 2341 or send an email to sunads@dbn.caxton.co.za.
Donation boxes for wool are available at The Mudpie Co, 771 Marine Drive, The Bluff or at the SUN office, 33 Main Road, Doonside, Amanzimtoti. The closing date for this project is June 2, with distribution to take place in July.
There are a few spot prizes up for grabs. The person who donates the most wool, or crochets or knits the most blocks, will win a special treat sponsored by Pia Health and Beauty Spa, Amanzimtoti. There are also breakfast vouchers from Clear Waters Spur in Beach Road up for grabs.
