Coedmore Bridge faces slight delay in opening

The reconstruction of Coedmore Bridge is reaching its final stages, however due to minor setbacks its opening will be delayed by several days.

THE rehabilitation of Coedmore Bridge has been met with a slight setback that sees the bridge now scheduled for an early July opening as opposed to previous reports of an end of June opening.

Nolwandle Gcaba, media liaison for Ward 64, said, “Afrostructures is planning on finishing roadworks early July, despite the concrete delays, they are dedicated to opening the bridge for traffic as soon as possible. They are working on end block bases that are almost finished, approach slab ready for back fill material, upstand walls set up and continuing with the roadworks. We appreciate the community for its patience and tolerance during this period,” said Gcaba.

Coedmore Bridge is an essential link for residents of the Durban South. Drivers have had to make lengthy diversions of 45 minutes or more since it was destroyed. The eThekwini Municipality allocated R48m to restore the 90m, two-lane bridge with pedestrian walkways which was funded through the National Treasury’s Municipal Disaster Response Grant.
