Rising Wentworth actor makes his big break

Wentworth’s Kyle Lionel Jasmin experienced his lucky strike when he was cast in a role as a youth pastor in Netflix’s Meet the Khumalos.

FOR years Wentworth actor Kyle Lionel Jasmin kept his dream small like an unlit match, small but full of promise and potential. That spark was kindled finally when he landed a spot on Netflix’s Meet the Khumalos movie.

The 28-year-old actor played the role of a youth pastor, where he starred alongside the likes of Nandipha Khubone, Khosi Ngema and Khanyi Mbau. For Jasmin, starring in this movie was not only a debut, but was the beginning of his journey to chase his life’s dream.

Jasmin said that acting was like second nature to him.

“Acting came quite naturally to me. As a child I found myself drawn to the film industry through watching it on TV and I instantly gained a love for it. Over the years my admiration and interest in the industry continued to grow until I got my first opportunity in April 2024,” said Jasmin.

He recalled the day he went for an open mic session and said it felt surreal to even think back on it.

“I entered acting through Friends Of SA Comedy castings. I met the team behind the movie at an open mic session that they were hosting,” said Jasmin. After an engaging conversation and sharing an interest for the industry, Jasmin was able to secure his first major role.

“It was a scary but exhilarating feeling. I never imagined that my dive into the world of cinema would be met with such an incredible opportunity. I’m just humbled and grateful to be seen as an emerging actor with the potential to inspire,” said Jasmin.

Jasmin shared that he takes inspiration from South African icons Charlize Theron, Connie Ferguson and Leleti Khumalo, as well as international talent Johnny Depp, Angela Bassett and Will Smith. He said he admires actors who were allowed to play various versatile roles but also roles that embody their unique characteristics.
