eThekwini’s water interventions begin to show positive results
Exco reported that the water supply has improved to the areas supplied by the Wiggins System, including Montclair and Wentworth.
THE stability of water supply to areas through the Wiggins Systems has improved for the past two months. This emerged at a recent Executive Council (Exco) meeting held on September 16.
It was also reported that there has been an improvement in the stability of water supply, which had previously seen recurrent interruptions.

eThekwini Municipality said in a statement: “The entire Wiggins System has been stable for over two months, following the implementation of the revised standard operating procedure with uMngeni-uThukela Water.
“The South Coast Augmentation (SCA) inflows fluctuate between 65 to 80 megalitres a day (ML/day), depending on upstream demand. The SCA is now switched off in the afternoon from 15:00 to 21:00.”
In other areas that are affected by reduced raw water, including areas supplied through the Western Aqueduct, the municipality will continue to implement bulk rationing to ensure equitable water distribution.
Water tankers and static tankers are also deployed to areas that experience prolonged water outages due to infrastructure incapacity and demand.
“Interventions to reduce water leaks and stabilise the water supply are beginning to yield the desired results,” said eThekwini Municipality in a statement.

This is according to a progress report presented to Exco, which showed the reduction of backlogs and quicker turnaround times for reported faults. This also includes interventions to stabilise the water supply to some areas.
The reduction of leaks is due to the deployment of plumbers to reservoir zones that have the highest water losses.
In the central reservoirs, the Wiggins Systems supplies water to these areas:
- Fynnlands
- Austerville,
- Brighton Beach
- Wentworth
- Montclair
- Rossburgh,
- Woodlands
- Sea View
- Parts of Woodhaven
- Parts of Mobeni Heights
