Garrith Jamieson, ALS Paramedics spokesperson, said the incident occurred at about 18:30 in the southbound carriageway near the Quality Street offramp.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos as a fully laden taxi had collided with a vehicle, leaving multiple casualties. Immediately more ambulances were dispatched to assist. A triage was done on the scene and it was established that 17 people had sustained various injuries ranging from minor to serious. Once all of the injured people had been stabilised on the scene they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care they required,” he said.

The accident caused severe disruption to traffic along the M4 as emergency crews tried to free the injured passengers and clear the carriageway. Motorists were faced with long delays well into the evening.

Circumstances leading to the crash are being investigated by the police who were on scene.
