Call in for a cause at Merewent Cheshire Home
Residents and businesses are encouraged to contribute to the Merewent Cheshire Home's 10 Calls of Kindness Telethon fundraiser.
THE Merewent Cheshire Home is preparing to host its 10 Calls of Kindness Telethon on March 25 and 26. This event had gained significant traction, marked by a donation of R50 000 from businessman and philanthropist Vivian Reddy. This contribution represents a crucial step toward ensuring the long-term sustainability of an institution that plays an indispensable role in providing care and support for individuals living with severe physical disabilities.

Reddy’s donation has served as the formal inception of the telethon campaign, establishing an encouraging precedent that the home will inspire a wide-reaching, community-driven fundraising initiative. The primary objective of this initiative is to secure the long-term sustainability of the home and to continue delivering essential services under increasingly difficult financial circumstances.
Issues the home faces
Currently, the home finds itself confronting significant financial hurdles that jeopardise its capacity to maintain its vital programme. Among the most pressing challenges is the urgent need to replace a specially adapted transport vehicle. This vehicle is not just a convenience but a lifeline for residents, facilitating their mobility and access to critical medical appointments. Beyond this, the home must address a considerable outstanding municipal bill while also managing its ongoing operational costs. These include expenses related to staff salaries, medical supplies and the daily necessities required for the care of its residents.

Chairperson’s comments
Raven Naidoo, the chairperson of the home, described the donation as more than a simple gift; he sees it as a powerful catalyst meant to galvanise wider support across the community.
“We urge corporates and individuals alike to come forward and support this cause. Together, we can ensure that our residents continue to live with dignity, care, and hope,” he said.
The organisers are inviting businesses and members of the public to contribute in various ways, whether by helping to finance the purchase of a disability-friendly vehicle, assisting with the settlement of outstanding municipal debts or offering ongoing financial or in-kind support.
The telethon details
The telethon will be held at the Merewent Cheshire Home, located at 15 Eksteen Road, Merewent, running each day from 09:30 to 16:00. Community members can support the event by reaching out to 10 people within their own networks to encourage pledges or by making direct donations themselves.
Every contribution, regardless of size, carries significance in helping the home progress toward financial stability.
