Irene Chetty, from the SDB-ABM, explained that the programme’s main aim is to motivate learners to value and safeguard their surroundings, while also helping them grasp how crucial they are in keeping the environment healthy.

“The Help You, Help Me booklet given to each learner will inspire learners to connect with the natural world, it teaches that exchange is the backbone of life, when we help each other, and the natural world, our own life gets better,” said Chetty.

She added that they were happy to work with the school and the Earth Organisation to bring this project to Ward 64.

Chetty said that the learners’ high level of excitement and willingness to take part made the programme all the better. “The learners were extremely enthusiastic. We hope to bring more programmes like this to other primary schools in the area,” she said.

By teaching the children early on about the importance of environmental care, the SDB-ABM and the Earth Organisation are laying the groundwork for a future where environmental stewardship is a common value.
