To have Warren identify some of your interesting insects, snakes or spiders, Whatsapp or call him on 072-211-0353.

Common rhombic night adder: Dangerous

Identification: A stocky snake which is usually brown or grey above, with the same colouration on the belly, with darker rhombic markings on the body and a single distinct V-shaped marking on the head. It grows to a maximum length of around 80cm.

Favourite food: Frogs and toads

Habits: Contrary to its common name, the night adder is also very active during the day. Their cryptic patterns leave them almost invisible on the lawn or in leaf litter.

Bites: This snake’s bites cause severe pain and swelling but the venom is not considered deadly to humans. In the case of a bite, seek medical attention, as hospitalisation may also be required in order to properly deal with the symptoms. Anti-venom is not needed, nor is it effective in the treatment of this bite. Should a pet be bitten, seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible.
