EDITOR – This is an invitation to all Bluff residents and those from surrounding areas to participate in the Bluff drag race event.
Venue is Oriel Road with the start at the intersection with Shamrock Road. The finish line will be at the intersection with Beacon Road. All types of vehicles are eligible, cars, motorcycles, scooters, trucks, buses in fact any type of motorised transport, preferably with an open exhaust. See if you can set the fastest time of the day with the most noise. Spectators are welcome but are cautioned about their safety as there are no sidewalks and you will have to sit on fences or climb trees where they are available. Participants are also warned about the dangers of cats, dogs or monkeys crossing the road. Oriel Road residents wishing to exit and access their properties and use the road will have to take their chances between timed runs but the authorities accept no responsibility for their safety. See if you can be the fastest, loudest and most irresponsible competitor on the day. There will be no prizes or trophies for the winner, only the bragging rights. The date and time for the event to be announced in the Southlands Sun and on radio. The above tongue in cheek invitation is the result of repeated appeals to the authorities to install calming strips in Oriel Road and their illogical response thereto.
Oriel Road has Dunville Road above and parallel and Watsonia Road below and parallel both of which are fitted with calming strips. My question to the authorities is, what is the difference between the above two roads and Oriel Road. None that I can see and in fact Watsonia has a paved sidewalk which makes it even safer than Dunville and much safer than Oriel. Oriel has become a convenient racetrack to access Spar shopping centre for those motorists who don’t want the inconvenience of calming strips. How much longer must we put up with their irresponsible and selfish behaviour? Councillor Prinsloo, please act.
