Hashim takes reigns as Proteas Test captain

Durbanite and ex-Dolphins captain and player, Hashim Amla was appointment as the Proteas Test captain this week.

“The KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union and Sunfoil Dolphins team are extremely happy and proud of Hashim Amla’s appointment as the Proteas Test captain. Hashim will always be a son of KZN Cricket and we congratulate and wish him well in this new leadership role”, said Jesse Chellan, CEO of the Sunfoil Dolphins.

“Hashim is an absolute role model on how the game should be played. I am extremely excited to see how this shapes the Proteas test team under Hashim and Russell’s leadership going forward,” he continued.

Fa-eez Jaffar, president of the KZNCU added: “Hashim has his own style of leadership. He has an exceptional quality of bringing a team together. He is committed to ensuring that South Africa is the number one test playing nation in the world.”

Hashim becomes South Africa’s fifth captain since the Proteas’ re-admission to international cricket in 1992.

After graduating from Durban High School, Amla made his debut for the Dolphins, soon captaining South Africa at the 2002 U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, leading his team to the final.

His promise led him to being appointed captain of KwaZulu-Natal at the young age of 21.

A right-handed top order batsman, Amla bats at number 3 for South Africa in Test matches and has opened in limited overs contests.

He is currently ranked by the International Cricket Council as the world’s number 4 batsman in Test and One Day Internationals (ODIs).

Amla became the first South African to score a Test match triple century when he scored 311 not out against England in 2012.

In the 57th innings of his one-day international career, Amla became the fastest batsman to score 3,000 ODI runs, requiring 12 innings fewer than Sir Vivian Richards.

On 8 December 2013, he became the fastest batsman to score 4,000 ODI runs, requiring eight innings fewer than Sir Vivian Richards.

In his 57th match, Hashim Amla became the fastest cricketer to reach 10 centuries in ODIs.

In 2013 he became the first batsman since Ricky Ponting to head both Test and ODI rankings at the same time in the latest ICC charts. He was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2013.
