District bowls pairs down to semi-finals

Last Friday’s R800 snowball was not won as Ron Gillespie was not present.

AS the scribe for this report, I must apologise for the serious mistake of leaving out the team of Roy and Mike Funnell who had also made it through to the play-off stage of the district pairs, making it four, not three Wanderers men’s teams that contested the final 32 which resumed at Stella Park and Wanderers on Saturday.

Sadly, two of our teams lost on Saturday; Kim and Russell going down by five shots to Westville’s Clinton Inglis and Graham Turner, and Richard Hendicott and Chris Klopper losing by a single shot in the cruellest manner on the extra end to ‘Toti’s Dave Saunders and Peter Shepard when they were holding shots for the win to have the opposing skips bowl glance off a wide short bowl to wick up against the jack and steal the match from them.

Steve Van Rooyen and Graham Funnell managed to win against Durban’s Brian King and Edward Myeza and so did Roy and Mike Funnell manage a win against Durban’s Des Levin and Wally Pitt. Sunday thus dawned and all the men who had earlier played at Stella Park came across to Wanderers while the women all played at Durban.

Our two Wanderers men’s teams – namely Steve Van Rooyen and Graham Funnel and also Roy and Mike Funnell contested the last 16, but sadly both teams lost in this round. The event is now at the semi-final stage, and will proceed all day next Sunday at Wanderers which is the host club, when both men and women will be competing to get into the finals. It is hoped that there will be a large number of spectators and visitors on this occasion. The presentation will take place directly after the finals on Sunday afternoon.

Last Wednesday, the roadrunners pairs were played out with a smallish field of only 12 teams. Best score of the day was recorded by Derek Stevens and Johan Nel with a 4+15. Chris Klopper and Len Roscoe achieved the best session with 2+19. Bob Hayward (R40) and Dawn Spack (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils and Brian Osman won the meat raffle. The lotto numbers of 2-5-9 were not chosen by anyone so it is another carry over.

In the only club competition played and reported, the finals of the 2013 men’s drawn fours was contested between Arnie Harper, Bob Hayward, Errol Pienaar and Johan Nel against Dennis Gericke, Mike Freeman, Mike Flack and Shaun McAlister. Arnie’s side led virtually all the way by a small margin and finished victorious with a score line of 19-15.

Forthcoming events: This Wednesday is Lyn Wilds pairs in mufti. Do go along and enter your side. The weekend sees the resumption of the district pairs with the semis and finals scheduled for Sunday. Please lend your support, and help to make our visitors feel welcome and appreciated.

Please note that owing to the PNB pairs, this month’s Rawson’s fours skins has had to be cancelled and will not be played.

Last Friday’s R800 snowball was not won as Ron Gillespie was not present. The various meat winners were: Rump steak, meat balls and burger patties Allan MacEwan and Eddie Bailey, Deboned leg of lamb Brian Craig, chicken pack Eddie Bailey, pork ribs Eddy Bailey and Allan MacEwan (again), rump steak Dave Leuchar, chicken Keith Wild.

On Friday, 19 September, go along and listen to the sounds of ‘DJ Westroy’ starting after the raffle and snowball.

Members note that there are certain changes to the laws of the sport of lawn bowls which will come into effect from 1 October. One of the changes involves the law relating to foot faulting. It will now be legal to have ‘any part’ of a foot on or over the mat both at address and on delivery. It used to be like that until it was changed to ‘one whole foot’ etc. So from 1 October it goes back to the original ‘any part’ etc.

Just another quick note to members about their dress-code when playing tabs or local competitions in mufti: Please refrain from wearing sandals without socks. It looks really sloppy and shows a certain degree of lack of self pride. Rather wear a pair of flat soled shoes or sneakers with socks.
