Bluff BC bowlers join umpires’ ranks

They give up hours of their time to gain the right to wear the badge, and then are often called on to spend hours on the banks of bowling greens, often having to give up playing themselves.

THE venues for the open and senior masters have now been decided, and Bluff Bowling Club’s Sarie Bisset, Bridget White, Jay Retief and Robert Mhlongo will be in action at Hillcrest Bowling Club, while Glynis Mackrory and Daphne Reinhardt will play at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club.

This event starts on 29 July. The club wishes them all good bowling and members are asked to support if possible.

Club competitions held on Saturday saw Janice Rodgers win the senior women singles title for the year, while Dawn Spack came second. The men’s drawn pairs game saw Dave le Roux and Steve Baker beating Greg Dorrofield and Brian Osman.

Friday night’s attendance draw was not won, as Kitty Schaffer lost out. The jackpot is now R720.

The sponsored DJ Lashrite pairs competition was held on Sunday. First session was won by Ben Newton and Colin Nicholas, second session went to Jumbo Nel and Nick. Overall winners were Johan Nel and Herbie Roux. The 50/50 board was won by Kurt Spack and Phyllis Maritz won the raffle.

A number of club members played in the KZN pairs at Kingfisher District last weekend. Sadly none of Bluff BC’s teams went through to the play-offs, although some came close. No women are entered in the fours and only one team of men will be playing. Good bowling, guys.

In all sport, there has to be someone who knows the rules and officiates at games to ensure all players have equal opportunities. In bowls, these people are called umpires or technical officials. They give up hours of their time to gain the right to wear the badge, and then are often called on to spend hours on the banks of bowling greens, often having to give up playing themselves. Bluff BC is fortunate to have a few of these dedicated people, some of whom have gone even further and upgraded their grade to level two. Now retired Yvonne Johnston, active Dudley Dorrofield and Daphne Reinhardt have now been joined by Chrissie Smith, who recently completed her level two. The club congratulates her and thanks these members for their efforts.
