WEDNESDAY’S Family and Friend’s development bowls at Wentworth Bowling Club saw a number of new faces on the green.
More members of the community are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to try their hand at the social game of bowls.
The winners were Dudley Sanders and Barry Masefield with Phil Hill and newcomer, Dominique Mitchell, taking the biscuits home. Hazel Smith was the winner of the weekly raffle and Herbie Roux and Vicky Williams shared the spoils of the 60/40 board.
At Friday’s Bluff Meats men’s bowls the bias played into the hands of Gerald C Royle, Joe McNamara and Ashley Sherrard who showed the field a clean pair of heels with a resounding plus 27 win. Second were Graham Bransby, Colin Coetzee and Eric Coetzee.
The sportmen’s prize went the way of Dirk Venter, Robn de Gouveia and Reg Behr. A beaming Jumbo Nel’s number came out the bag to win the substantial pork roast that was raffled. Dudley ‘Dorro’ Dorrofield was the happy recipient of the raffled beef roast. Brian Smith and Reg Behr were the winners on the first 60/40 board and Graham Bransby and Kurt Spack pocketed the booty from the second board.
Organisers of the Friday bowls, Tomcat and Maria Cavanagh wing their way to the UK on Sunday for their bi-annual holiday with their family. They are wished safe travels, a well deserved rest from bowls and many opportunities to create indelible memories with their loved ones.
The weekend saw many club competitions being contested. Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis edged out John Somerville to take himself through to the next round of the Doug Mitchell singles. The women’s drawn pairs and drawn fours were played to semi-final level. Both the drawn pairs semi-final matches were played to the wire, with each winning team sneaking home by one shot. Finalists are Sharon de Kock and Ann Bonthrone who will take on Cheryl Waterman and Jenny Greef. This match will be played on Wednesday at 12.30pm. The drawn fours finalists are Cora van der Westhuizen and her team of Gwen Tait, Bernie Pool and Zoë Dougal who will compete against Maree Sadie’s team of Eileen du Plessis, Margaret Walters and Ellen Loots. The date for this will be announced.
Members are reminded of the Grace Hare mixed trips to be played on Saturday 23 July at 1.30pm. Entrants should be at the club by 1pm for the draw.
Dancing enthusiasts are invited to the club on Friday 29 July for an evening of music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s with some country and ‘boeremusiek’ thrown in. It is with much regret that the club announces the death, after a long illness, of previous club employee, Doug Bird. Club members who would like to contribute to snacks for this occasion can contact Ellen Loots on 078-069-9287.
