Hikers to explore Cato Ridge dam, mountain views

The mesa is open grassland and there are also some geologically interesting glacial striations on the summit.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club will venture out to Nagle Dam in Cato Ridge on Saturday, 8 October.

Hikers will meet at 1.45pm at the first picnic site at the entrance of Nagle Dam. The hike will take them through the reserve, past the dam wall and back. The R30 entrance fee is payable by credit card only. BYO for the braai and social afterwards at the picnic site. This 8km hike is graded two, moderate.

On Sunday, 9 October hikers will visit KZN’s ‘Table Mountain’, also in Cato Ridge. Call hike leader Philip Collyer on 082-417-0204.

This 10km hike to the top of the KZN Table Mountain in the Inanda Valley will see the explorers enjoy some of the escarpment and then return the same way. Views of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, Nagle Dam and Old Baldy are possible on a clear day. The mesa is open grassland and there are also some geologically interesting glacial striations on the summit. Petrol sharing costs R25; car guard R20; guide fees R25 for members and R50 for non-members. Hikers will meet at 7.30am at Union Main Centre, 45 Old Main Road, Pinetown or at 8.15am at Cato Ridge Motors (close to Eddie Haven Drive, Cato Ridge).

This hike is strenuous and is graded four.
