Prizes galore for heat-beating WBC bowlers
Thursday, 29 December saw the Rawsons breakfast trips Christmas special played. Prizes abound and many bowlers left the club with big smiles on their faces.

DESPITE the incessant heat, the last two weeks of the year were busy bowling weeks at Wentworth Bowling Club (WBC).
The Family and Friends development bowls played on Wednesday, 21 December saw Dudley Sanders and Victor Shaw taking home the first prize, the last one for the year.
The biscuits were won by Craig ‘Snapon’ Herholdt and Albert van Niekerk.
Vickie Williams enjoyed the first prize off the 60/40 board and Darryl Stone pocketed the second prize. The development bowls initiative will continue in 2017 and members of the community are invited to join in by attending every Wednesday afternoon. Play starts at 3pm.
The Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls played on 23 December gave Graham Bransby, Andy Cloete and Claude Newman an opportunity to accumulate some extra Christmas cash when they took first place ahead of Norman Moor, Andy Cloete and visitor Mark. The sportsmen’s prize went to Jumbo Nel, Barry Buckland and Dave Mattheos. Ecstatic bowlers, Graham Bransby and Greg Dorrofield added to their planned Christmas tables by winning the raffled pork and beef roasts. Dave Carroll and Derek Stevens were the recipients of the first and second prizes off the first 60/40 board and Ken Koch and Tom Cloete ended the morning with the winnings from the second board in their pockets.
The morning of Wednesday, 28 December saw the regular participants in the Chicken Shack pairs competition take to the greens to do battle for the spoils. Tom Cloete and Eric Coetzer emerged victorious and took home the first prize. Herby Roux and Ben Venter ended the day’s play with the second prize. Second session prize went the way of Terry Micholson and Brian Smith. Ron ‘Bias’ Addinall won the big spoils off the first 60/40 board and Robbie Carr pocketed the second prize. The second board booty was shared by Ellen Loots and Bob Hayward.

Visitors from Witkoppies Bowling Club in Gauteng, George and Sylvia Nysschen teamed up with Chad Wilson to take first place. Brian and Paula Osman, playing with Chris Pozyn, took the second prize. Keeping it a day in which family teams prevailed, Tom and Andy Cloete playing with Eric Coetzer won the second session prize. The raffled whisky went the way of Chris Pozyn with Ron ‘Bias’ Addinall and Peter Snyman packing the bottles of Rawsons red wine into their bags. Ellen Loots and Steve Evenwell heard their numbers called to win the prizes off the first 60/40 board and Andy Cloete and Brian Smith shared the second board spoils.
The Rawsons trips competition is an accumulated score challenge with each month’s score being calculated and carried over for 12 months. The big prizes will be awarded after the games played in June 2017.
Before taking to the greens on Thursday, the leader board was headed by Jumbo Nel, Brian Smith and Hilton Lassak. Brian and Paula Osman and Chris Pozyn were holding second place and were closely followed by Gary Moffat, Lilah Nel and Bridget White. The accumulated scores are posted every month and can be checked on the main notice board.
The final competition for 2016 was the Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls on Friday, 30 December. William Richardson, Brian Smith and Ben Venter took a five shot win over second-placed Norman Moor, Neville and Kevin. The sportsmen’s prize was awarded to Adie Fuller, Dudley Sanders and Victor Shaw. The Two Chicks kitchen won the raffled pork roast and Gerald took home the beef roast. Julia, Albert, Marge and Ellen were all winners on the two 60/40 boards drawn.
Birthday wishes are extended to Cora van der Westhuizen who celebrated her special day on 2 January. Here’s wishing you a wonderful year with many successes on the bowling green, Cora.
Members are happy to see Oom Dirk Venter back in circulation after a spell in hospital. Don’t give the club any more scares, Oom Dirk, you’re expected to be a picture of health at all times.
Condolences are sent to Mandy Miller and the family of Tyran Miller who died after a long illness. Tyran’s positive attitude and brave fight are a shining example to all. RIP Tyran.
The club kitchen is up and running again. Food will be prepared by the ‘two chicks’, Mel and Michelle under the astute management of Zonia. The hall is available for hiring for private functions and braai facilities are on offer for corporate functions and team building events. The big screen can be set up to watch sporting highlights.
