Ramblers to tackle tough Old Baldy this weekend

On Saturday 3 June take a hike to Rocky Bay (Scottburgh) (in lieu of Sunday hike).

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club hikes to iSithumba (Old Baldy) on Saturday, 3 June.

Call hike leader Linda on 083-353-8319.

This hike goes up, over and down the granite head known as Old Baldy, in what is the club’s most difficult hike and not for first time hikers.

However, the spectacular views make the steep climbs worth the slog. Members pay R25 and non-members R40 towards the guide fee. Meet at an earlier time of 1.15pm at Green Corridor’s iSithumba Adventure Park (15030 D1004 Road, Ximba). Directions: GPS Location 29°40’40.65?S 30°42’12.33?E. From the N3 from either Durban or Maritzburg, take the Hammarsdale off-ramp and turn towards Inchanga.

Travel past the old railway station and turn right at the Inchanga Station sign. Travel up the hill to the T-junction and turn right. After a short distance, follow the T4 tourism sign, turn left on the tar road D1004 and proceed about 7km to find iSithumba Adventures on the right near the river. This hike is graded five, is very difficult and it carries a vertigo warning. Steep hills and rock climbing are involved.

On Saturday, 3 June hikers venture out to Rocky Bay in Scottburgh in lieu of the Sunday hike.

Call hike leader Anne Wilson on 079-850-0206. The club will join up with the weekenders for this hike. The terrain is easy with mainly coastal forest and some sugarcane, hence it is fairly exposed. A shorter route may be available. If the weather is good, take along your costumes to swim after the hike or have drinks in the pub. Meet at 7.30am in road at Glenwood Village, 397 Che Guevara (ex-Moore) Road or in time to start hiking at 8.30am from Rocky Bay Resort. Petrol sharing costs R45. Entrance fee R20. This 19km hike is graded two.

On Sunday, 4 June there will be no scheduled hike due to the Comrades Marathon and associated road closures.
