Extra outing for Heritage Day weekend hikers

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club will take advantage of the coming Heritage Day long weekend with three hikes on offer.

On Saturday, 22 September, hike leader Ann will lead hikers to Krantzkloof Falls.

Call Ann on 083-666-5630 about this grade four 7km hike which carries a vertigo warning. Hikers will set off on the Molweni Trail down to the river, then up-stream on the Kloof Falls trail to the falls. This outing includes a number of river crossings, steep descent and return ascent. Entance costs R30 or use your Rhino card. Meet at 1.45pm at main picnic site at Krantzkloof Nature Reserve in Kloof Falls Road, Kloof.

On Sunday, 23 September, there will be a combined Midlands and Durban Ramblers hike at Karkloof.

Hike leader Neville Lee (call on 083-626-99830 will co-ordinate this grade two-plus six-hour hike which mostly takes place in pristine indigenous forest. Go along and see the indigenous clivias in bloom, then have lunch at Grey Mare’s Tail falls. The R35 cost is to be confirmed.

Springside Nature Reserve and surrounds is the site for the Heritage Day hike on Monday, 24 September.

Call hike leader Steve on 083-956-1556 about this grade two or easy hike which can be as short or long as you like.

Hikers will spend a relaxing morning with a hike and braai at Springside Nature Reserve in Hillcrest. This hike is over grasslands where there may be Spring flowers in bloom, through riverine forest, wetlands, and some extended hiking through neighbouring grassland. Braai fires will be lit around noon. BYO food, drinks and utensils. There is a R20 donation. Meet at 9am.
