Spiders breakfast trips hosted at Wentworth Bowling Club

Wentworth Bowling Club hosts spiders to fundraise money for the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities.

WITH near perfect weather conditions and both greens now open for play Wentworth Bowling Club enjoyed good turnouts for its monthly competitions.

Thursday, November 25, saw two greens in use for Spiders Breakfast Trips and, having an odd number of teams entered, a trips side was put together to balance the field. This proved to be a successful move for the extra side, comprising Shane Roelofse, Moses Naba and Rob Armstrong, who ended the day in first place to pocket the main money prize.

Grateful thanks to Spider Williams for his generous sponsorship for this monthly tournament. The club has seen numbers in this tournament grow as more and more bowlers enjoy their breakfast before taking up the challenge on the greens in a quest to secure some of the sponsored prize money.

Sunday, November 28, dawned a warm, sunny day and the monthly Big Jim Pairs competition attracted a full contingent of bowlers to see every rink taken on both greens. Overall winners, with a healthy four plus 28 were Dave and Maria Arnold with Mark Burgess and Paul de Waal taking second spot with a respectable four plus 19. The second session prize went to Greg Dorrofield and Deon Els.

Spiders to collect monies for the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities were held at both events and the generosity of the bowlers resulted in R800 being raised for the cause.

Friday’s weekly Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls saw Dave Arnold partner with Mike Hough and prove their prowess, to take top spot on the podium. Phil Hill and James Hopkins left with the sportsmen’s prize. Rob de Gouveia’s number was drawn from the raffle bag and he was rewarded with a generous braai pack. The 60/ 40 board spoils went the way of Kurt Spack and Maria Cavanagh.
