Durban south runners excel at Balwin Sport Dolphin Coast Marathon

There were a few runners from the Bluff Athletic Club and Yellowwood Park Athletic Club who took on the gruelling 42km distance.

ATHLETES from Yellowwood Park and the Bluff Athletic Club showcased their prowess at the Balwin Sport Dolphin Coast Marathon, hosted by the Dolphin Coast Striders in Durban on March 17.

The marathon, featuring distances of 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km, commenced from different starting points. The 21km runners set off from Sibaya, uMhlanga, while the 10km race began at Virginia, La Lucia. All participants converged at the Durban Promenade Amphitheatre to finish their respective courses.

Among the notable performances was Kirsty Goodwin, representing Bluff Athletic Club, who delivered an outstanding performance in the 42km race. Despite the challenging terrain and uphill sections, Kirsty completed the race in an impressive time of 03:46:00, securing the second position in her age category (50–59) and ranking 35th overall among female participants. Her achievement underscores her commitment to improving her Comrades qualifying time.

Reflecting on her experience, Goodwin expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I had a great run, thoroughly enjoyed myself and I managed to get the time I wanted. The weather helped as it was cool.”

Another remarkable display came from the Yellowwood Park Athletic Club pair, David and Leona Lamont, who conquered the demanding 42km distance. David exhibited exceptional speed and endurance, finishing the marathon in an impressive time of 02:55:00, earning a coveted spot in the A batch for the Comrades Marathon. Meanwhile, his wife, Leona, displayed unwavering determination, crossing the finish line after 04:18:00 of relentless effort.

Reflecting on his race, David Lamont expressed contentment with the course and conditions. “The road was good despite the rain, and the scenic views of the ocean provided a breathtaking backdrop for the run,” he remarked, appreciating the picturesque setting along the M4 Coastal Highway from Ballito to Durban.

The Bluff and Yellowwood Park athletic clubs extended congratulations to all their runners for their successful marathon endeavours.
