Merebank para surfer (13) rides the tides

The 13-year-old para surfer only began surfing three years ago but has racked up a list of achievements.

MEREBANK para surfer Nathaniel Naidoo (13) is making waves in the sport despite being physically challenged. Nathaniel is set to compete in the upcoming SA Para-Surfing Championships on April 12 and 13, and is  prepared to showcase his skills on a national stage.

Raksha Naidoo, Nathaniel’s mother, said he was diagnosed with sacral agenesis, which is a lower limb disability that is caused by an incomplete or absent development of the sacrum, lower part of the spine. Despite this, his passion and commitment to surfing have seen him rise to remarkable heights in the para-surfing world.

His introduction to para-surfing began three years ago when his school physiotherapy coach noticed him balancing well while performing handstands. Recognising his potential, the coach invited him to try out para-surfing. Raksha said she was not confident at first, as Nathaniel had never swum, and she questioned how he would manage the sport with a lower limb disability.

Upon encountering the Made for More team, she said her scepticism gave way to admiration. “There was a different level of love, help, care, motivation and selflessness for the children with special needs, and you could see their happiness was all that mattered,” she said.

Nathaniel adapted to para-surfing with enthusiasm, establishing himself in the sport right away. In 2022, he placed second in the SA Para-Surfing Championships in the Men’s Prone Assist division and won the “Most Stoked Surfer” award. He followed this up with a third place at the 2023 KZN Para-Surfing event, continuing to grow his catalogue of achievements.

For Nathaniel, the highlight of surfing is the adrenaline rush in surfing the waves. “The most thrilling thing is feeling free, with no restrictions. Being able to be a champion at something is everything to me,” he said.

His is a story of strength and triumph, demonstrating that no obstacle is too great to overcome. As he prepares for this year’s SA Championships, Nathaniel is poised to push his limits once again and follow his dreams.
