A Grade 12 learner from New Forest High School will be participating in an international karate tournament in Japan later this month.

A GRADE 12 rising karate star from New Forest High School, Hlelokuhle Madondo, has been selected to represent South Africa in the International Karate Friendship 2025 tournament in Japan from April 25-27.

His karate journey began two years ago

Hlelokuhle’s karate journey began in February 2023, when a friend invited him to a gym session. He quickly discovered a deep passion for the sport, and his dedication has led to remarkable success in a short period of time.

His determination and skill have been evident as he clinched top spots in several tournaments.

The 16-year-old athlete from Woodhaven Park secured first place at:

  • a provincial tournament in Umlazi,
  • third place finishes at a national tournament in Johannesburg,
  • the Best of 16 Tournament in Mandeni,
  • the Karate Champion of Champions tournament in Cape Town.

These results earned him a well-deserved spot on the national team for the tournament in Japan.

When asked about his inspiration, he said, “I’m inspired by my friend’s achievements and what the benefits of karate are. I love karate because it teaches me self-discipline and self-defence. I found it in my teenage years and it’s something that has changed my life.”

He said success is also a reflection of the valuable life lessons karate imparts, including the development of discipline and confidence.

As he prepares for the tournament in Japan, Hlelokuhle is focused on giving his best performance and making his country proud. The karate tournament in Japan is set to be a pivotal moment in Hlelokuhle’s sports career, and the South African karate community is supporting him as he aims to represent his country on the world stage.

However, in order to go to Japan he needs to raise R35 000 to cover his flights, accommodation and fighting gear.

His mother, Carol Madondo, said they have been trying to support Hlelokuhle by promoting his journey on social media and encouraging people to contribute to their fundraising.

“I even considered organising a raffle and selling tickets to help raise funds,” she said.
