Net closes over towel thief employee

Woman caught for towel theft.

AFTER making off with over R167,000 in towels, a South Durban woman was finally undone when she tried to sell them at a local fleamarket.

The 25-year-old woman, who worked in administration at a local towel manufacturer and distributor, stole towels valued at R167,333.54 over a five-month period. During this time she received deliveries for which she wrote invoices that were not filed and in other instances, she redirected deliveries to her home.

Her employer became aware of the operation when he was told towels from his company were being sold at a fleamarket. An audit showed towels being sold at the market matched with those for which invoices were not filed.

The woman was charged with 42 counts of theft for which she was given a three-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay back R130,000 to the company for the stock that was not recovered.

“Brighton Beach SAPS management thanks the owner of the business for the manner in which he assisted us in retrieving evidence against his employee during our investigation. Warrant Officer Harold Mngadi is commended for his thorough investigation and the manner in which the case docket was compiled for sentencing, which also enabled the business owner to receive compensation for his loss,” said Brighton Beach SAPS communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
