How to protect your child against window falls

Adult supervision is always recommended - especially when children are around in areas with open windows or when they are on a balcony.

As a parent, one of your primary responsibilities is ensuring the safety of your child. One area where some parents overlook is the risk of window falls.

Window falls can happen at any time (not just from high-rise buildings) and can result in serious injury or even death. However, by taking some simple precautions, you can protect your child from this potential danger.

In this article, we will discuss some effective ways to protect your child against window falls.

Install window guards

One of the most effective ways to prevent window falls is by installing window guards. Window guards are metal bars that are installed on the outside of the window frame. They prevent children from falling out of the window while still allowing fresh air to flow into the room. Window guards are available in a range of styles and sizes, and they are relatively easy to install. When purchasing window guards, make sure that they comply with your local building codes and are appropriate for the type of window you have.

Use window stops

Window stops are devices that prevent windows from opening more than a few inches. They are easy to install and can be a great way to keep your child safe. Window stops are particularly useful for windows that are high off the ground or windows that are easily accessible to children. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing window stops and test them regularly to ensure that they are working correctly.

Keep furniture away from windows

Children love to climb on furniture, and if there is a window nearby, this can be dangerous. Keep furniture away from windows, particularly in children’s bedrooms or play areas. If your child wants to look out the window, provide a stable stool or chair that is specifically designed for children.

Teach your child about window safety

It’s essential to talk to your child about window safety. Teach them not to play near windows, to never lean on screens, and to always ask for help when opening or closing windows. Encourage your child to alert you if they notice any problems with the window, such as a broken screen or a window that won’t close properly.

Install window blinds or shades

Window blinds and shades can be another effective way to keep your child safe. They can be closed to prevent children from looking out of the window or opened to let in light and fresh air. When purchasing window blinds or shades, make sure that they have a cordless design or have cords that are out of reach of children. Also, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.

Supervise your child

One of the most effective ways to protect your child from window falls is to supervise them at all times. Never leave your child unattended in a room with an open window, particularly if the window is on a high floor or is easily accessible. If you need to leave the room, make sure that the window is closed, or use window guards or stops to prevent your child from falling out.
