Klipspruit West Community Aerobics Club welcome both young and old

'It's more than just aerobics'

Members from the Klipspruit West Community Aerobics Club said that their fitness club is about more than just aerobics. Ida Collins and Siphiwe Welcome, who are the club captains, said that for many members the fitness sessions are about letting go of any problems or fears they might have. Welcome said that both young and old are encouraged to join because no matter your age, your health needs to be a priority.

“I speak from personal experience when I say that our clinics are too full and our gyms are too empty. Most of the time we suffer from diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes or even if it’s just minor aches and pains not realising that sometimes all we need to do is get our bodies moving and our blood pumping,” said Welcome.

“I used to suffer from high blood pressure, I spent hours at the clinic waiting to be assisted and to receive my medication but ever since I joined this club my blood pressure is under control and I no longer need the medication. Instead of spending hours in line at the clinic, take an hour every day and focus on working out. The disease will go and you will lose weight,” she added.

Collins said that she joined the aerobics club a year ago and said that with discipline and consistency she was able to take her life back. “We underestimate the importance of keeping fit. Most of us are over the age of 50 and we’ve realised that if we want to age smoothly we need to put ourselves first,” said Collins.

Fabian Slinger, who is the Klipspruit West Aerobics instructor, said that the elderly are committed to working out and positively changing their lives. When asked about the goals he has set out for 2019 he said that he wants to work on getting more youth to participate.

The sessions take place every week day from 8 am to 9 am at the Klipspruit West Recreational Centre.
