Zamana We Women’s Project assist widowed women in the society
They only work with widows but they are willing to expand the project by teaching youngers.
As we come to an end of commemorating brave women, Soweto Urban saw an opportunity to learn more about what inspires women to do the things they do, what drives them to wake up every morning and sit in different corners of the streets trying to make a living.
“The motivation behind the Zamana We Women’s Project is the struggles that women went through during the apartheid era, especially for women from the rural areas who are widowed, most came to Gauteng to find jobs so they can put food on the table, said Thulani Xaba the beneficiary of the project.
“Winnie Thundo worked as a domestic worker and her employer taught her how to weave so she can be independent in case they parted ways, the thought of going back home were a lot of people lived in poverty didn’t sit well with her and the fact that finding a good job is very scarce.
As a result she started a project that would not only be beneficial to her but to other women with no support system, it involves a number of 43 women that work within the project,” Xaba continued.
According to the beneficiary, the aim of the project is to reduce poverty more especially in rural areas and to assist widowed women in the society, so they can be able to raise their kids. It has helped a lot of people as others are teachers in weaving, teaching those who are willing to learn, Xaba mentioned that he is still learning under the project.
They only work with widows but they are willing to expand the project by teaching youngers especially girls so they can help them get off the streets but basically the aim is to inspire widowed women.
