Boyfriend arrested after Protea woman’s fatal stabbing

Lesego Mutlwane (25) was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend during an argument in Protea. The suspect is expected to appear in court today.

The family of Lesego Mutlwane (25) is calling for justice following her tragic death, allegedly at the hands of her boyfriend.

Mutlwane was visiting her boyfriend when an argument reportedly broke out, resulting in her being fatally stabbed in the chest.

Her father, Edwin Mosupi, said that following the incident, the suspect allegedly briefly fled the scene before going to his brother’s house and asking him to call the police, as he was reportedly willing to surrender.

“My wife and I were among the first people to arrive at the scene, and we are still traumatised to have witnessed our daughter lying lifelessly in the kitchen.

“What makes this whole situation even more horrible is that she was killed in front of their daughter.

“She is still convinced that her mother fell and that she is going to be OK. We can’t even bring ourselves to break the news of her passing to her,” Mosupi said.

Mosupi added that his granddaughter has now lost one parent and that, as a family, they are pleading with the justice system not to fail them, as has happened with other victims of gender-based violence and femicide.

“I have never thought that such a horrible incident would happen to Lesego. He [the boyfriend] looked like a decent young man, but now my daughter has lost her life in his hands, while he was supposed to be the one who loves and protects her.

“It is really difficult to comprehend why men treat women like this, while they are supposed to be their refuge. I cannot imagine how scared my daughter was when this happened, and the pain she felt.

“Prison is just a comfort compared to what he has done to my daughter. He can still get another chance at life and probably be out on parole, but we will never see Lesego again,” he said.

The suspect is expected to make his first appearance in the Protea Magistrate’s Court today, November 3, while Mutlwane’s family prepares for her burial, set for Saturday, November 8.
