Dobsonville rape and kidnapping case transferred to High Court

A 56-year-old Dobsonville man accused of kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old child during the Easter holidays is expected to stand trial in the High Court after investigations were finalised.

The man accused of kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old child during the Easter holidays is expected to stand trial in the High Court after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed that investigations had been finalised.

The accused appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, where Magistrate Thelma Simpson informed him that the DPP had directed that the matter be transferred to the High Court.

Reading the directive in court, Simpson said the investigations had been completed and that the accused would be arraigned in the High Court.

“This office is in the process of drafting an indictment,” Simpson read from the DPP’s directive.

She said the docket would remain with the DPP while the indictment was being prepared and would be served on the accused before the matter is transferred to the High Court.

The Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court postponed the case to August 5 for the indictment to be served before it proceeds to the High Court.

Simpson also noted that no bail application had been brought before the court.

She told the accused that if he instructs his attorney to apply for bail, arrangements will be made with the prosecution for him to be brought from the Department of Correctional Services to appear before the court.
