Pikitup strike disrupts waste collection across Johannesburg
Waste collection services have been disrupted across Johannesburg after casual workers contracted through Pikitup's fleet ad hoc service providers embarked on a protest demanding permanent employment.
According to Pikitup, the workers, who form part of its refuse collection service, have downed tools, disrupting scheduled waste collection at depots across the city.
The entity said the latest protest is expected to worsen collection backlogs that had already developed in some areas following the June 30 demonstrations against illegal immigration.

Pikitup spokesperson Anthony Selepe said the entity is working to minimise the impact of the disruption.
“Pikitup is working around the clock to clear the existing backlogs and ensure sustainable service delivery to communities despite the current operational challenges,” said Selepe.
He apologised to residents whose refuse may not have been collected as scheduled and said a recovery plan would be implemented as soon as conditions permit to clear the backlog and restore normal waste collection services.
Pikitup thanked residents for their patience and understanding, adding that it remains committed to restoring normal waste collection services as quickly as possible.
