Soweto water supply under pressure amid high demand
Johannesburg Water has warned that residents in parts of Soweto may continue to experience low water pressure and intermittent supply as systems remain strained by high demand.
Residents continue to experience poor water pressure and intermittent water supply as Johannesburg Water works to stabilise its systems amid sustained high demand.
In a customer notice, Johannesburg Water said the Soweto water supply systems are currently constrained, requiring ongoing interventions to balance supply and demand while recovery efforts continue.
The utility explained that elevated water usage across its network has slowed the recovery of both its own infrastructure and that of its bulk water supplier.

As a result, Johannesburg Water and its partners remain in close coordination and are closely monitoring the situation.
“Necessary interventions are being implemented to support system recovery,” the utility said.
Johannesburg Water warned that some water outlets may be temporarily closed at night to help restore capacity at several reservoirs. Areas that could be affected include Doornkop, Braamfischerville, Meadowlands, Powerpark, Orlando East, Diepkloof, Naturena, Zondi, Chiawelo and Aeroton.
During the recovery period, residents in these areas may experience low water pressure or, in some cases, no water supply.
Johannesburg Water said further updates would be communicated as soon as more information becomes available.

Residents have been urged to use water sparingly to help ease pressure on the system and support ongoing recovery efforts.
City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero said the municipality is aware of the challenges facing Soweto residents and is working with Johannesburg Water to address the situation.
