Emotional memorial service held in Zola for the late learner; Ayanda Martin

The 13-year-old learner was discovered dead on March 10 after allegedly being struck by lightning.

Residents, family and friends gathered at an open field next to Pace Commercial Secondary School in Zola on March 14 for the memorial service of Ayanda Martins.

Martins, a 13-year-old learner at Bhukulani Secondary School was found dead on March 10 in an open field where the memorial service was held.

It is alleged that he died after being struck by lightning.

Community leader, Jerry Zulu said the loss of Martins who was still young and had a bright future ahead of him has left the community in disbelief.

“The community has been greatly affected by Ayanda’s unexpected and yet unreal passing. I pray that his family finds peace and they trust in the lord for guidance during this difficult period,” said Zulu.

Emotions were high among mourners as well as residents who attended the memorial service. Heartfelt condolences were expressed through poetry, songs and speeches from those who had a close relationship with the deceased.

At the memorial service, Martins was described as a very intelligent young boy who was forever smiling and really respectful.

Speaking to Urban News, the Uncle of the deceased, Sizwe Mbonani said as a family, they are completely devastated by Martins’s death and the loss has left them with many answered questions.

“Ayanda’s death will forever leave a painful scar in our hearts and terrible memories in our minds. As a family we will continue to be strong and to try recover. There is nothing we can do but accept the circumstance we are facing,” said Mbonani.

Mbonani added that they hope that the community will continue to demonstrate compassion to one another in addition to them, as they are truly grateful for the assistance they are receiving.
