Walking in his old shoes: Akani donates 40 pairs to Emshukantambo learners

Simangaliso Dlamini saw the need to plough back into his former school and relieve the learners and their parents.

Simangaliso Dlamini, also known as ‘Akani’, visited his former school, Emshukantambo Secondary School in Pimville, Soweto, to donate 40 pairs of school shoes to learners on May 12.

Today is the school’s 27th anniversary, so this donation marked a milestone.

Akani was Emshukantambo’s Representative Council of Learners president and played a pivotal role in the school leadership.

He is now a programme director at SABC 1.

The learners received Akani well when he shared his schooling journey with them, reminiscing about wearing the same school uniform and being in the same building.

Dlamini said that before donating somewhere else, he saw it fit to start at the place that shaped his future and led him to where he is today.

“I am here with my industry brothers, Jerome Duplooy and Dillan Park, at my former high school to give pairs of shoes to the school, hoping it will make a difference.

“We also donated heaters to those who help around the school so they can keep warm,” said Dlamini.

School principal Richard Masemola was grateful for the donation, “I am beyond happy that a former learner, made and shaped by this school, saw the need to plough back into his school. It is big for us.

“I hope those in the industry, and in a position to give back, help because more learners are without school shoes.”
