Philipstown youth race toward hope in new WireCar documentary

Media professionals, influencers and journalists packed the Artistry in Sandton to watch the film light up the big screen.

The unique draadkar (wire car) racing culture is being celebrated on the global stage in the new feature documentary, The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix, which premiered in October.

On October 29, media professionals, influencers and journalists packed the Artistry in Sandton to watch the film, which chronicles the small town’s incredible journey of hope and serves as the cornerstone of a multifaceted initiative to create sustainable change.

Spearheaded by the newly established Philipstown WireCar Foundation, which seeks to turn the film’s global spotlight into tangible impact, all proceeds will support vital upliftment programmes for the community’s youth.

Vice chairperson of the foundation Alistair King said the film shines a global spotlight on the town’s annual wire car race, an event that, for over 14 years, has been a tiny beacon of hope for local youth.

“It follows a group of young racers as they pour their hearts and imaginations into building intricate cars from scrap wire, bottle caps and soft drink cans, preparing to compete in the only race of its kind in the world.

“More than just a competition, the race is a testament to their spirit, a source of pride, and a powerful metaphor for turning discarded materials into things of beauty and purpose,” said King.

He added that the documentary, produced by Giant Films and Accenture Song, proved to be the perfect vehicle for this story.

Told from the inside out, it celebrates the community’s spirit, while acknowledging its struggles, with the wire serving as a powerful central metaphor.

“A piece of discarded wire is rusting and of little use. But if you pick it up and work with it, you can make it into something beautiful. That became a symbol for the community, the kids and for what this foundation aims to do,” said King.

The foundation is channelling the global spotlight into lasting impact through three connected initiatives.

The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix (WCGP) documentary, now streaming on Prime Video, showcases how imagination and determination can flourish even in the face of adversity.
