Eldos@Work brings skills training to Eldorado Park

Youth in Eldorado Park can now access business analytics, robotics, and trades courses through a new partnership between Eldos@Work and an online varsity.

Eldos@Work NPC has partnered with an online university to bring academic and career opportunities closer to home for youth in Eldorado Park.

The NPC was founded in 2021. It is led by chairperson Alicia McPherson, secretary Gillian Petersen and treasurer Christopher Rodrigues.

In a community grappling with high levels of joblessness, limited prospects and crime, Eldos@Work decided to establish a local campus offering a dedicated Youth Development Programme.

The project aims to empower young people in Eldorado Park and the surrounding areas through accessible and accredited skills training.

Through the partnership, students can enrol in quality council for trade and occupations accredited 12-month courses.

The flagship offerings include business analytics, robotics process automation, project management, beauty academy, and general residential repair.

“Business analytics is not only in demand in South Africa but internationally as well,” Rodrigues explained.

“Robotics and coding courses help young people streamline processes in companies, banks, or local businesses, creating real career potential.”

The courses were selected after careful consideration of local needs.

“Many of our young people are not inclined towards mainstream education,” said McPherson.

“Our trades programme offers practical skills like plumbing, electrical work, welding, and locksmithing, helping students generate income directly while contributing to the local economy.”

The partnership began through introductions and was formalised through direct engagement with the university and regulatory authorities.

The initiative ensures all courses are properly accredited and licensed, offering students accredited qualifications.

The NPC has invested heavily to get the programme off the ground, with tens of thousands of rands already spent on recruitment, administration, and resources.

Rodrigues said if they do not invest now, the youth risk being drawn into crime because they lack opportunities. Providing education and skills creates a sustainable alternative, he added.

“Students without access to computers or the internet will use a dedicated computer lab on-site, supported by mentors who ensure learners complete their modules and fully benefit from the courses. There are also plans to provide meals for students, creating a safe and motivating learning environment.”

Beyond academic learning, students have access to mentorship programmes that teach entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness.

In a pilot phase, youth successfully launched a local charcoal business, with guidance on stock management, marketing and operations.

Faith Temple Ministries (FTM) has generously provided the venue for free, offering a facility that will be fully utilised to serve the community.

Bishop Marcus Jacobs of FTM said there are not many resources in Eldorado Park, especially buildings that can be used for community development.

“This centre is designed to touch as many lives as possible, offering young people training, CV workshops, and opportunities to gain employment. It is about reversing negative patterns in our community and creating hope.”

The first intake aims to accommodate 50 students rotating through a computer lab with 15 PCs. Registration is free, and financial assistance is available for students who cannot afford fees.

The university provides the course content and unlocks modules online, while Eldos@Work manages student support, mentorship and practical access.

The open day will be at FTM, 78 Sirkel Road, EXT 5, Eldorado Park, on February 7. This will be followed by a career expo from April to May 2.

Future plans and collaboration

Eldos@Work plans to expand into a fully equipped online campus, with facilities similar to those at established universities, including an auditorium and specialised training spaces.
