Residents urged to arm home alarm systems to improve safety

Carry a remote panic button at all times. It sends an immediate signal to the control room and reduces delays during high-stress situations.

As crime trends continue to evolve and crime levels remain high, residents are urged to protect themselves and their families by consistently activating their alarm systems.

An alarm system acts as an early warning tool, helping to alert homeowners, security providers and emergency responders to suspicious activity or intrusions as quickly as possible.

Charnel Hatting, group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity Services Group, said incidents often occur where alarm systems were installed but not activated at the time of a burglary, intrusion or emergency.

“An alarm system can only assist if it is activated and monitored correctly,” said Hatting.

“Perimeter security is the first layer of defence, and this includes your alarm system. The entire perimeter of the property should be checked regularly for weaknesses.”

Fidelity ADT encouraged residents to follow these important safety tips:
• Arm your alarm even when you are at home.
• Activate your alarm whenever you leave home, even for a short period.
• Test your alarm regularly to ensure it is functioning properly.
• Teach your children and domestic workers how to use the alarm system.
• Ensure all doors are locked and windows are secured before leaving home.
• Keep your perimeter secure at all times.
• Activate outdoor detection systems.
• Lock away all equipment when not in use.
• Remain extra vigilant when leaving or arriving home. If you notice anything suspicious, do not enter your driveway.
• Never allow strangers onto your property.
• Carry a remote panic button at all times. It sends an immediate signal to the control room and reduces delays during high-stress situations.

Hatting concluded by saying that seconds matter during an emergency and that security is a shared responsibility.
“By making alarm activation part of your daily routine and using your panic button correctly, you can improve your safety,” she said.
