Despite the defeat, Tryon said the SA team again proved they could dig deep.

The Proteas women need to tighten up with the ball, admitted stand-in captain Chloe Tryon, having been shut out of this weekend’s final after falling to India in their third straight defeat of the women’s ODI tri-series in Colombo on Wednesday.
India were ruthless with both bat and ball, earning a 23-run victory after the momentum built by the Proteas middle order was disrupted by a delay due to bad light with two overs left in the match.
Set a hefty target of 338 runs to win, the SA team were led by Annerie Dercksen (81 runs off 80 balls) and Chloe Tryon (67 off 43), but they fell short after returning from the delay, as they were restricted to 314/7.
Earlier, after being sent in to bat, India were anchored by Jemimah Rodrigues (123 runs off 101 deliveries) and Deepti Sharma (93 off 84) who shared 122 runs for the fifth wicket, guiding their team to 337/9.
“It’s a little bit disappointing. I think we can say as a team, it was probably not the best first half we had with the ball,” said Tryon, who filled in for regular skipper Laura Wolvaardt (missing due to illness).
“Obviously we got a little bit tight at the stumps and our fielding wasn’t up to standard. It hasn’t been up to standard this whole tournament.
“I think we leaked a lot around the day. I thought we won a good toss and I think it was a good wicket throughout, but we were just a little bit short.”
‘We showed a lot of character’
South Africa, unable to pick up any points in three tri-series games thus far, will face hosts Sri Lanka in Colombo on Friday (6.30am start) in a dead rubber clash in their last match of the two-week tournament.
Though they were no longer able to secure a spot in the final, to be contested between Sri Lanka and India on Sunday, Tryon said the Proteas were proving they could dig deep in the build-up to the World Cup to be held in similarly hot conditions in India later this year.
“We never gave up in the end. That’s what I love about this team. We showed a lot of character,” Tryon said.
