Swinger players should rely on Alec Laird-trained Spiaggia and Duncan Howells’ charge Promising in Race 1 over 1200m. The other runners with exposed form seem to have limitations, but watch the betting on the first-timers.
Brazilian-bred Spiaggia has run two good races in strong fields so far. She went down just 3.25 lengths to For The Lads in the Ruffian Stakes over 1000m at Turffontein in March and then finished a 0.75-length second to Love From Al over 1200m at Clairwood in June. Sixth-placed Vale won next time, franking the form. Spiaggia started slowly in that race but her supporters can be sure that jockey Kevin Shea will not be caught off guard this time.
Promising has placed third in both her outings to date, last time keeping on at one pace and getting beaten 3.35 lengths by Dolomiti over 1200m at Clairwood. Fourth-placed Semra franked the form with a 6.50-length win over 1600m next time out.
Jay Boy looks the best bet on the card in Race 2. This son of Jay Peg should enjoy the 1600m distance and is overdue to open his account after placing in all three of his races to date.
