Soma’s charge looks ready to graduate

Anybody who has had a decent discussion with trainer Joey Soma will be aware he has always rated Special Preview as the best horse he has trained.

So when he starts to compare a runner to his champion sprinter, you know that horse has to be something special.

Graduation Day is that horse and the son of Trippi makes his third appearance on the racecourse on Tuesday night when he lines up in Race 5 at Turffontein, a MR 86 Handicap over 1160m.

On debut, Graduation Day was pipped by Mutamakkin; a runner Mike de Kock rated a superstar at that stage of his career.

It was another five months before we saw Graduation Day again and this time, the four-year-old gelding raced away from the opposition to beat Beach In A Bottle, winner since, by 11.25 lengths.

This time, Soma has picked a real test for his charge and we will all know how good he is after this run. It is significant that Anton Marcus is making the trip to Joburg just for one ride and that has to be respected.

He is likely to go off at a short price but could be worth a bet.
