Former Springbok captain Theuns Stofberg has died

Springboks legend Theuns Stofberg has died at the age of 68 after a serious car accident earlier this week.

Stofberg’s family confirmed his death in a statement, carried by Maroela Media on Wednesday morning.

The accident happened on the R304 outside Stellenbosch at around 7pm on Monday night and involved two other vehicles. One person died in the accident. 

Stofberg’s son-in-law, Stephanus Rabie, told Netwerk24 emergency services had to cut Theuns out of the vehicle before he was rushed to hospital for surgery to stop internal bleeding

The family said the injuries sustained in the horror car crash ‘were too great for his body to handle’.

Stofberg played 21 Tests for the Springboks between 1976 and 1984 and captained the side on occasion.

He started his provincial rugby career with Free State, before moving to the Northern Transvaal and Western Province, winning Currie Cups with each.

Free State Rugby said it was saddened by his passing.

“The Cheetah family’s hearts are sore and we send share our deepest condolences to his family and friends”.

Tributes have poured in for the rugby star on social media.
