Malcom Marx insists he’s still not where he needs to be!

Considered as probably the best hooker on the planet at the moment, the Lions’ enforcer Malcolm Marx believes he is still a few notches away from where he wants to be.

After receiving the Man-of-the-Match award just the previous weekend at Loftus, Marx and the Lions were brought down to earth after their narrow loss to the Blues at home last weekend.

“I’m not very happy with my own form at the moment, to be honest. The first and second game was all right, the third and fourth game my performances picked up a bit,” Marx said this week.

“It’s a long season and I have a lot to work on in my opinion. I’m working on that every single day.”

Just because the Sunwolves were hammered 50-22 in Durban last weekend, it can’t be assumed the Japanese side will wilt like that again, he warned.

Indeed, the Jamie Joseph’s troops actually finished stronger than the Sharks in that game.

“In this competition there’s no room for complacency. Anybody can win on the day. The Sunwolves play a quick, fast brand of rugby and that makes them dangerous” said Marx.

“If we don’t pitch up mentally, it will only put us on the back foot.”

The dynamic Springbok also believes the hosts can’t rely on the Ellis Park altitude alone to help them win, a point illustrated by the Blues coping well with the Highveld’s thin air.

“We have learned from our mistakes. We felt the Blues were a little bit more fatigued than us, because playing at altitude at Ellis Park is not easy,” he said

“But we allowed them in at times when we shouldn’t have. We’ve looked at the video and identified the areas where we needed maybe  a bit more intensity.”
