‘I’m not cheap’, Renard tells Safa

Herve Renard has effectively admitted that he was in negotiations with the SA Football Association over the Bafana Bafana headcoach position that was ultimately given to Stuart Baxter.

The Morocco coach will take on Baxter’s Bafana in an Africa Cup of Nations Group D clash at the Al Salam Stadium on Monday, and remained with the Atlas Lions back in 2017, when Safa were reportedly put off by his salary demands.

It remains to be seen if Renard remains with Morocco after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and if Bafana pursue the two-time Afcon winner again.

“This was in the past, of course I am not cheap,” said Renard on Sunday.

“And I know your country, if you want to do something, you can do something. If you want me one day, you know (this) before. If you want to bring a coach without experience, maybe it is a very good coach, it is up to them.

“It is not fair to talk (about money), if someone from the federation talks about that … it doesn’t normally have to go in a newspaper. These are negotiations. Negotiations are private, this is my opinion.”
