Amajita bow out of Fifa World Cup

South Africa will have to pack their bags and head home after finishing in fourth in the group

Uruguay and South Africa played out a goalless draw in their final Group D match in Incheon at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017.

Both sides produced goalscoring efforts with Uruguay’s Nicolas Schiappacasse having a number of chances throughout the match, but the forward was unable to make them count.

The Atletico Madrid man missed two chances with his head, while his one-on-one with South Africa goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto midway through the second half was clearly his best chance, but he fired his shot over the bar.

South Africa’s Luther Singh tried his luck from distance on a couple of free-kick opportunities in the second half with one of them even hitting the crossbar, but nothing could get past Uruguay’s Santiago Mele.

Amajita had a glorious opportunity near the end of the match when Singh found Mbatha with a brilliant cross, but the midfielder could not get his shot down to end South Africa’s journey on a high.

With the shared point, Uruguay finish the group in first place with seven points and will play in the Round of 16 on Wednesday 31 May in Suwon against a third-placed side, while South Africa will have to pack their bags and head home after finishing in fourth in the group.
