Pirates coach Mokwena explains why Shonga is not playing

Justin Shonga might be doing well for his national country Zambia, but he will have to wait for his chance to be in the starting line-up at Orlando Pirates, according to Bucs coach Rulani Mokwena.

The Zambian international scored two goals for Zambia this past weekend, but Mokwena says Tshegofatso Mabasa is still his preferred first choice upfront.

“The challenge is Mabasa,” said Mokwena.

“The challenge is that the competition is strong. Shonga is a very important player for us. He offers us a very different dynamic with regards to our game model and how we have to play.”

“And at the same time and the same moment, he knows that as much as he is important, he also has other important strikers he has to compete with. One being Mabasa, the other being Gabadinho Mhango, there is also Augustine Mulenga and the young Zakhele Lepasa. They are all important strikers and they all know how important they are to the team.”
