Baxter not getting involved in country vs club feud

Stuart Baxter says he was not involved in the decision of SuperSport United refusing to release players for SA Under-20 side for the U20 World Cup.

Baxter was appointed as the new Bafana Bafana coach and is aware of the ongoing club versus country war. The Englishman has pleaded for more harmony between clubs and Safa.

Matsatsantsa bosses choose not to release Teboho Mokoena to join Thabo Senong’s squad. Bidvest Wits was one other club that didn’t think it necessary to release its players for the youth national teams. Phakamani Mahlambi was ordered to stay in the country by the club as they challenge for league honours.

“I didn’t say we would not release players because I’m not the one making the decision,” Baxter said.

“I don’t like the club versus country scenario. I want it to be a club and country situation. I’m sure the club would love to help, but there’s the question of what the rules are and what the situation is.

“That, I can’t tell you.”
